In Spain, Día de Todos los Santos (All Saints’ Day, 1 November) is the day families visit the cemetery to remember their dead. It is gentle and familial rather than festive, though it comes with its own foods and even a piece of theatre.

What people actually do

People clean and dress family graves and niches, bring fresh flowers, and spend time at the cemetery, often meeting relatives there. At home and in bakeries the season brings traditional sweets: huesos de santo (“saints’ bones”, marzipan rolls), buñuelos de viento and, in Catalonia, panellets eaten around the harvest feast of La Castanyada. A long-standing custom is a staging of the play Don Juan Tenorio, part of which is set in a cemetery, around these dates. The Don Juan Tenorio staging tradition is strong in some cities but not universal.

When to go

1 November is a national public holiday across Spain; many shops close, though bakeries and florists do a brisk trade beforehand. Cemeteries are busiest on 1 November itself and often the day before; municipal cemeteries commonly extend their opening hours for the occasion. Exact hours are set by each municipality — check locally.

What to bring

• Flowers — chrysanthemums are traditional; many bring pots for niches.
• Cleaning materials for the headstone or niche plaque.
• Small change for flowers and parking near the cemetery.

The main spending is on flowers and seasonal pastries. Cemetery entry is free; the cost of niche upkeep or maintenance is a separate, ongoing municipal matter for families who hold one.

Travel and traffic

Because 1 November is a holiday it often anchors a long weekend (a puente), so intercity roads, trains and flights are busy for leisure travel as well as family visits. Locally, expect full car parks and congestion immediately around large cemeteries on the morning of 1 November; go early, or use public transport, which many cities reinforce for the day.
