Legal
Privacy Policy
Plain language, because this matters. This policy describes exactly what All Souls Day collects, why, and the choices you have. It reflects how the site actually works.
Last updated: 14 August 2026.
The short version
- We set no tracking cookies and use no advertising trackers.
- The only cookie the site can set is a session cookie for the private admin login — not for ordinary visitors.
- We collect only what you choose to give: a tribute (public) and, optionally, your email for an annual reminder.
- We never sell your data or share it for marketing.
What we collect and why
Tributes
When you add a tribute, we store the details you type — a name, and optionally years, relationship, a message, and a city or country. Tributes are public and appear on the wall with their own shareable page. Please don’t include information you wouldn’t want to be public. We also store a one-way, salted hash of your IP address (not the address itself) to prevent spam and abuse.
Candles
When you light a candle, we store a salted hash derived from your IP address and a random identifier
kept in your browser’s localStorage. This is only to stop the same person lighting many
candles on one tribute at once. We don’t use it to track you across the site, and it isn’t linked to
your identity.
Email reminders
If you ask to be reminded, we store your email address, the time you signed up, a one-way hash of your IP, and the exact consent text and version you agreed to. We use a double opt-in: you’re not added until you click a confirmation link. We use your address for one purpose only — a single annual reminder before All Souls Day — and never for anything else.
Server logs
Like almost all websites, the hosting server may keep standard technical logs (for example, requests and error logs) for security and reliability. These are managed at the hosting level.
Analytics
If the site operator has enabled analytics, it is a privacy-friendly, cookieless measurement tool that does not track individuals across sites. If no analytics is configured, none runs. Either way, the site sets no analytics cookies.
Your choices and rights
- Unsubscribe any time using the one-click link in any reminder email. It is honoured immediately, with no login.
- Remove a tribute: if you posted a tribute and want it taken down, or a tribute concerns someone and should be removed, contact us and we’ll act on it.
- Access or delete your data: email us and we’ll help. Because we deliberately collect so little, there is not much to hold.
How long we keep things
Tributes remain until you or we remove them. Subscriber records remain until you unsubscribe and, on request, are deleted. Short-lived anti-abuse records (used for rate limiting) are pruned automatically after a few days.
Children
This site is intended for adults remembering those who have died. It is not directed at children.
